Wexford GAA will launch a new jersey to mark the centenary of the historic Wexford football team that won 4-in-a-row All-Ireland Championships.
From 1915-1918, the Wexford Senior footballers defeated Kerry, Mayo, Clare and Tipperary to claim the historic four-in-a-row.
The Model County were agonisingly close to winning the five-in-a-row, losing the 1914 All-Ireland final to Kerry in a replay.
Wexford won the Leinster title for six years in-a-row between 1913 and 1918, a feat that was not matched until the great Dublin team of the 70’s.
The four-in-a-row in the Senior Football Championship doesn’t come around too often. The only other team to achieve this was Kerry, doing it twice, between 1929-32 and 1978-81 respectively.
Now, to mark the historic Wexford football team, Wexford GAA will release a special, once-off jersey that will be launched in the Talbot Hotel Stillorgan on Tuesday 1 May for the Wexford GAA Championship Preview Night.
The current Wexford Senior Footballers play Laois on May 12th at Wexford Park in the opening round of the Leinster Senior Championship – and as part of the commemoration, the Wexford side will wear the historic replica jersey.
The Wexford GAA Championship Preview night includes a host of Wexford sporting heroes such as Matty Forde, Tadhg Furlong, Mathew O’Hanlon, Kevin Doyle, Jim Bolger and our senior hurling manager, Davy Fitzgerald.
A few tickets, at €20 each, are still available for purchase on the door.
