At this stage, we’re all aware of how well the Wexford natives are doing in the Fitzgibbon Cup. In the Sigerson Cup, it seems to be a similar story…
Kilanerin club-man and inter-county Wexford footballer Niall Hughes starred at midfield for IT Carlow in their defeat of UCC on Sunday afternoon.
Also on that team was Monageer-Boolavogue’s Cathal Walsh, who was playing wing-back.
The Clongeen duo of Daryl Murphy and Adam Ryan were on the IT Carlow match-day panel for the game.
With stars on the UCC team such as Sean O’Shea, Killian Spillane and Brian Hartnett, IT Carlow’s win came as somewhat a suprise to many, with The42.ie describing it as “the shock of the tournament…”
Meanwhile, inter-county counterpart Martin O’Connor played at corner-back for the UCD team that defeated St Mary’s Belfast on a scoreline of 2-10 to 2-06 after extra-time.
Wexford hurlers and footballers playing such a high-level of competitive college matches can only help foster and develop the budding talent within the county.
Both Davy Fitzgerald and Paul Galvin will be sure to keep an eye out on how the Wexford natives are doing in their respective competitions as the first round of the Allianz League approaches.
