Wexford Were The Last Team To Win A December All-Ireland Final

Who knows, this could be a good omen for Wexford…

The GAA recently confirmed the fixture schedule for the hurling and football championships. December All-Ireland finals will be played, with the hurling final on December 13th and the All-Ireland football final played on December 19th.

It will be the first time a December All-Ireland football final will be played since December 1917, 103 years ago.

Wexford and Clare contested the last December All-Ireland football final.

The Yellowbellies would defeat the Bannermen on a scoreline of 0-09 to 0-05 to claim their third All-Ireland football title in a row.

Played in Croke Park, Wexford were captained by Seán O’Kennedy, whose brother Gus played at corner-forward.

The following year, in 1918, Wexford went on to defeat Tipperary by the minimum to claim their fourth title in a row.

Unfortunately, Wexford have not won – or competed – in an All-Ireland football final since they overcame Tipperary in 1918.
