Number Of Abortions In Wexford Revealed, As 6666 Terminations Occur Nationwide

6,666 abortions occurred across the Republic of Ireland in 2019..

Until 2018, the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act 2013 regulated access to lawful termination of pregnancy in Ireland. Under that legislation, a termination of pregnancy could only be carried out to avert a real and substantial risk to the life of the pregnant woman. Amending the legal position on abortion required a change to Article 40.3.3 of the Constitution.

Wexford Weekly can now confirm that 165 women, with an address in Wexford, opted for a termination in 2019 from the period 01 Jan – 31 December 2019.

We compared these numbers with the numbers from county’s with a similar population size to Wexford. The number of terminations in Tipperary was 174, Donegal (127), Kerry (48), and Wicklow (138).

6,666 terminations occurred nationwide in 2019, with 2493 with residence at a Dublin address.
