Young Wexford Footballer Suffers ‘Freak’ Neck Injury In Club Game

The young man’s father described the incident as a ‘freak injury’…

A 19-year-old Gaelic footballer from Wexford suffered a serious neck injury recently.

Jack Fortune, who plays with Crossabeg-Ballymurn, unfortunately suffered a serious injury in a club game against Taghmon in Bellefield.

“Luckily our physio, Darren Browne, reacted quickly to the injury indicating the player should not be moved. At the time he felt tingling in his fingers and was unable to receive a reaction from feeling his leg,” John’s father said to The Irish Independent.

An ambulance arrived, but unfortunately, the ambulance did not have the appropriate stretcher to carry Jack off the pitch, and thus, another ambulance was called.

The young Gaelic footballer went to Wexford General for X-rays, before he was then transferred to Waterford — and then on to the Mater Hospital Spinal Unit.

At the Mater, he underwent surgery on a broken spinal cord:

“He had the surgery on Tuesday last and the hospital is happy with his progress, having suffered injury to his vertebrae and spinal cord which was broken, but luckily not severed.”

Jack’s father, John, thanked the local community for their support and for their messages, while he also noted that Jack is on the mend — but the recovery process will take a while and a lot of patience.

Jack’s club team, Crossabeg-Ballymurn, echoed similar sentiments as they wished the young man a speedy recovery:

“Best wishes from us all to Jack Fortune who is recuperating after surgery on a serious neck injury, sustained in last weekends intermediate football game. Everyone in the club is thinking of you Jack and wishing you a speedy recovery,” a club post read.
