Mattie Forde Reveals His Toughest Ever Opponent

Wexford’s Mattie Forde recently sat down for an hour-long chat to speak about his football career and all-things Gaelic football…

A wide range of questions were posed to the Kilanerin/Ballyfad club man.

On The Clash Act GAA Podcast, Wexford’s only ever football All-Star award winner revealed his toughest opponent on the football pitch.

“For me, it’s very simple. It was Sean Marty Lockhart from Derry. He was an absolute nightmare. For some reason, Derry had four or five over the years like that that I marked. He was quick, he was aggressive and a good footballer,” Forde said.

“When people ask me that, I was lucky enough to keep him scoreless on most occasions, he was that good,” Forde joked.

“He was one of these lads that wouldn’t say anything to you. They are the ones that you’d want to be more worried about. He was tough as nails, an absolute nightmare, and to make it worse, he was a really nice fella off the field. You’d have guys that are sledging and picking you off the ball, but he was a real gentleman. By some distance, he was the toughest guy I would have had the displeasure I’d to mark anyway,” Forde said.

The competition he faced in Wexford was not to the same standard as Lockhart. When playing club football at home in Wexford with his club Kilanerin/Ballyfad, he revealed that “none were too handy” in Wexford, but “none you’d be having sleepless nights the night before” either.
