Battle Of The Long Lay-Offs This Sunday In Carlow

There will be a battle of the long lay-offs this Sunday in Carlow….

Wexford Senior hurling champions, Ferns St-Aidans, will take on the Carlow hurling champions, St Mullins, in the AIB Leinster Senior Hurling Championship.

Ferns St. Aidan’s have waited 13 weeks since their Senior hurling triumph, where they defeated St Martins by one point back in August.

It was a historic day for the Wexford club, having claimed the title for the first time in their club’s history.

Unlike their Wexford opponents who claimed the county title for the first time, St Mullins have been successful in Carlow 28 times.

Interestingly, their opposition have actually had a lay-off of fourteen weeks, as they played their Senior hurling final back in August, one week previous to the Wexford final. Just like the Wexford champions, St Mullins were able to grind out results along the way too.

If that comparison is anything to go by, it suggests that these two teams are well-able to grind out results which could make for a cracking encounter.

A win for Ferns will see them advance into Leinster semi-final, where they’ll face the winner of the Laois Champions (Clough-Ballacolla) versus the Dublin champions (Kilmacud Crokes).

The match takes place at Netwatch Cullen Park in Carlow on Sunday at 2 pm.

In other related Leinster Championship news, Oulart-The Ballagh will have their first outing in the Leinster Intermediate Hurling Championship today. They take on Naomh Barróg of Dublin, in Parnell Park, with throw-in at 1.30pm. (Saturday).
