Open Letter Written To Wexford County Council To Keep Gorey Visitor Centre Open
An open-letter has been written to Wexford County Council to keep the Gorey Visitor Centre open…
Last week, the Gorey Visitor Centre revealed that the news that it was due to be closed in May 2023. A local councillor stated that it was a decision made by the Wexford Chamber of Commerce, and not Wexford County Council.
In a statement highlight the news of their closure, the staff stated that:
“We do not want to say goodbye and we’re so disappointed by this decision. We truly believe that this Centre is a valuable asset in the community,” it reads.
The Gorey Visitor centre not only acts as an information hub, but it has also acted as a place for budding artists to showcase their work.
“This is an open letter to Wexford’s Chamber of Commerce and County Council from the crafters, staff, local businesses and community who are petitioning for a reversal of closure of the Gorey Visitors Centre.
Over the years, it has become the heart of the artistic community in Gorey, a focal point for tourists to find out about local places to visit, and also a sustainable shop to buy unique gifts by Irish Crafters.
As is obvious by the outcry on social media, the news of the Gorey Visitors Centre’s impending closure has not been welcome by the local community and further afield. This closure will not just affect the hard working staff within the shop but also the artists and crafters who rely on these sales for their livelihood and will likely also have a negative effect on local businesses as the staff would recommend these locations to tourists to visit.
It is for these reasons and more, we ask that the County Council reverse this decision and keep the Gorey Visitors Centre open – either in this location or an alternative one.
We welcome everyone who agrees with us to sign this petition.”
