The 2022 Wexford Senior hurling championship final took place at Chadwicks Wexford Park today…
It was tit-for-tat for most of the game and Ferns struggled to shrug off an injury-stricken St Martins team without star players Rory O’Connor, Joe O’Connor, and Jack O’Connor (who came on as a late substitute).
In the final moments of the game, it was a drawn game and it looked like a replay would beckon.
Late Ferns substitute Bitzy O’Connor made the perfect impact though, as he slotted over a ball from the 14-metre line in the dying moments to put Ferns St-Aidans one point ahead.
This was followed by an excellent sideline cut from Johnny Dwyer, who was immense throughout the game.
Ferns would go on to win the game by two points, on a scoreline of 1-19 to 0-21.
Wexford inter-county player, Paul Morris, received the Man of the Match award and he described the winning feeling as a “pinch me” moment in an interview with TG4 following the game.
In turn, the Ferns players made history today as they lifted the Wexford Senior hurling championship title for the first time in their club’s history.
Ferns captain Declan Byrne invited injured team-mate, Gavin Bailey, up to the stands of Wexford Park to lift the trophy alongside him.
