Wexford’s Barry O’Connor Rules Out Inter-County Return After Being Cut From AFL

It looks like Barry O’Connor’s time at Sydney Swans has came to an end…

That’s after the professional Australian Football outfit have announced that they will not be offering the Wexford-man a new contract.

But although O’Connor’s time at the Swans has ultimately ended, he has ruled out returning to Wexford to play on the inter-county team.

Instead, after just finishing his Business degree, he is remaining in Australia.

His AFL agent is attempting to get him another club, although O’Connor notes that this is unlikely. Speaking to Buzz.ie, he stated that he still has an itch to play AFL – but if things do not work out for him in that regard, he’ll use his degree out there.

“I am going out to Sydney regardless, so I am in a position where my whole life isn’t hinging on it.”

“If there is no sport at the start of next year I will be working in Sydney and using my degree.”

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want AFL to be involved, and playing professional sport. It’s an opportunity very few get and I have really enjoyed it the last few years.”

“I don’t see myself playing GAA next year, maybe club at the end of the year but definitely not at inter-county level,” he said.

O’Connor made the move to Australia in 2019 as an International Category B Rookie.

Sydney Swans announced that both Barry O’Connor and Lewis Taylor would not be on their list for 2023.
