Wexford Boxing Heavyweight Niall Kennedy defeated in Boston

Niall “Basil” Kennedy suffers first defeat of career to Devon Vargas

It just wasn’t to be for Gorey native Niall Basil Kennedy on Saturday evening in Boston as he suffered the first defeat of his career at the MGM Springfield. Kennedy whose trainer is Packie Collins came into the fight with a record of 13-0-1. However, he lost out on this occasion to former American Olympic boxer Devon Vargas.

Kennedy showed plenty of grit and determination but Vargas was just the better boxer on the night. Vargas applied pressure in rounds four and five, which ultimately ended in the referee calling a halt to the match with just seconds remaining of the fifth round.

However, it is nothing to be ashamed of indeed we should be proud of Niall and his achievements to date. When you look at it he was fighting a boxer that had come up against Andy Ruiz Jr, we all know what he done to Anthony Joshua not long back !

All is not lost for Niall he is an incredible athlete and he will want to put things right. Something which I firmly believe he will. We as Wexicans need to all get behind him and support him.
