A Wexford TD has called on the Government to tackle yet another pressing issue in Wexford…
Sinn Féin TD for Wexford Deputy Johnny Mythen has raised with the Tánaiste the need for a day care service for people with dementia in Co. Wexford.
Deputy Mythen said:
“I have raised with the Tánaiste the total lack of day care services for people with dementia in Co. Wexford. It is my understanding that Co. Wexford has never had such a service, which is a failure for the people who need it most.
“Day care services offer vital specialised support, care and community for our people who are living with dementia. They also offer invaluable support, understanding, and respite for the families of those caring for their loved ones.
“The Alzheimer’s society of Ireland recently conducted research about Caring and Coping with dementia during Covid-19 and found family carers to be at breaking point – with their mental and physical wellbeing seriously affected.
“Now more than ever these families need this service, and that is what I outlined to the Tánaiste today. I urged him to outline the government’s plans to address this shortfall in service,” Mythen said.
There are a lot of pressing issues, however, this is one that needs to be placed on high priority. Yet again, family carers seem like the people that are suffering the most, when really, since the pandemic started, they should be the people receiving the most.
