Wexford Football Legend Brian Malone Hangs Up His Boots

The Wexford footballers will be preparing for the year without Brian Malone…

It follows yesterday’s confirmation of the news that Wexford football legend, Brian Malone, has decided to retire from inter-county football.

Malone, who is from the Shelmaliers club, lined out for his county over sixteen seasons.

Malone has been a rock in defence for the Yellowbellies and no doubt was one of Wexford’s most consistent players ever to put on the jersey.

The 35-year-old completes his career having played 174 competitive games for the Model County between the Allianz Football League and the Leinster and All-Ireland Football championship.

After a stellar year with his club, many would still argue that there is plenty more time left for Malone to continue wearing the purple and gold as a player. With his club team, the Shelmaliers, he played a pivotal role in helping them claim Wexford Senior Football Championship silverware.

Brian’s club, the Shelmaliers, have issued a tribute to his inter-county playing days:

“A true sportsman Brian for his club and county, thanks for some great memories, Shelmalier GAA club wish you the best in your game retirement. We’ll hopefully see you on the sidelines passing on your knowledge to our up and coming players,” they said.

Many of Malone’s former Wexford footballing teammates from down through the years have also thanked him for his professionalism, guidance, and work both on and off the pitch.

Wexford and Kilanerin legend Matty Forde was one of those:

“He was well capable of going again this year but owns nothing to no one. 174 all out is some innings. He was a leader in our team as a chap and never stopped after that. As great a guy off the field as he was footballer on it,” Forde stated.

Many of his other teammates have described him as a ‘legend’.

It’s a phrase that is thrown around too often; but in this case, it’s fitting.

Thank you, Brian, for the great memories.
