Rory McCarthy Compares Rory O’Connor To 1996 Wexford All-Ireland Winner

Rory McCarthy has been through it all

He has been through it all and he has seen some great hurlers.

McCarthy, who hails from the same club as Wexford Senior hurler Rory O’Connor, has compared the St Martins man to one Wexford 1996 All-Ireland winner.

Hailing from the same club as O’Connor, McCarthy witnessed O’Connor grow up through the underage ranks, all the way to where he is today.

O’Connor was one of the standout performers in the National Hurling League — and his performances, and the scorelines he was racking up, gathered a lot of attention.

For McCarthy, O’Connor plays a bit like 1996 legend Martin Storey, but the St Martins club-man is also able to add another element to his game:

“Rory is certainly Wexford’s main man. He’s something different really. He’s something we haven’t seen in the county since I don’t know when. I don’t ever remember seeing a forward like him anyway,” he said speaking to SportsJoe.ie.

“I saw Martin Storey at his best and Martin would chip in with two, three or four points every day he went out, but Rory O’Connor has unbelievable potential to score goals as well. To me, he’s nearly unstoppable when he gets the ball in his hand because he just wants to take his man on. And he’s able to stroke it over then from 50/60/70 yards on the run, off left and right.”

Wexford will face Galway in the opening round of the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship on Saturday, where a huge home crowd is expected to cheer on the Model County.
