Former Wexford Manager Is Front Runner To Take Over Waterford Senior Hurlers

It appears that a former Wexford hurling manager is the front-runner to take over the Waterford Senior Hurling team…

The Waterford managerial position became vacant at the end of the inter-county season after Liam Cahill opted out of the set-up and then joined Tipperary.

Waterford have since been on the look-out for a new manager, and one name that keeps coming up, is former Wexford hurling manager, Davy Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald was manager of the Wexford Senior hurling team from 2016 to 2021, before stepping down and leading the way for Darragh Egan to come on board.

Fitzgerald was coaching the Cork Camogie team for the past year, but he has since vacated that position as he told the manager that it was always just a one-year role.

The Irish Independent are reporting that “speculation is mounting that there will be a second coming for Davy Fitzgerald as Waterford hurling boss with Déise officials closing in on naming Liam Cahill’s successor.”

Former Wexford hurling coach Stephen Moloumphy has apparently ruled himself out of contention, and so has former Wexford underage manager, Joe Fortune, as he continues to ply his trade with the Westmeath Senior Hurlers.

It would be the second time that Fitzgerald has managed Waterford, previously managing the team from 2008 to 2011.

Just last year, Fitzgerald was also the front-runner to take over the Galway Senior hurlers, before Galway GAA decided at the final moments to choose Kilkenny legend, Henry Shefflin, instead.
