Browne the hero as Gorey Rangers through to FAI Junior Cup semi-final after penalty shoot-out win

Gorey Rangers took on Peake Villa of Tipperary today…

The match, which took place at Ramstown in Gorey, seen Gorey Rangers go 1-0 up after just 10 minutes courtesy of an Adam Territt strike. Shortly after play resumed, however, Peake Villa went straight on the attack and Ronan McGuire put one into the back of the net.

The game finished 1-1 apiece, and when the teams could not be separated at the end of extra time, penalties were needed.

Cian Browne, who was drafted into the team this year, was Gorey Rangers’ goalkeeper and he crucially saved one penalty during the shoot-out, placing the pressure on Peake Villa. Peake Villa hit the woodwork on the other two occasions when their penalty takers stepped up, while the Gorey Rangers players calmly slotted their three penalties past the ‘keeper. Gavin O’Brien, Ryan Cullen, and Mark Woods scored Gorey Rangers’ three penalties.

The Wexford side have now set up a semi-final clash against Villa FC. Vila FC defeated St Michaels in the other quarter-final (2-0).

Cockhill United will play Pike Rovers FC in the other semi-final of the FAI Junior Cup.
