Wexford boxers bring home one Gold and one Silver medal from European U17 Championships

Sean Kelly of St Abbans/Kilmyshall BC will be bringing home a U17 European Boxing Championship Gold medal. Sean boxed for gold on Wednesday against Yiğit Keskin of Turkey and emegered the victor in the 52kg division. The judge’s decision read 4-0 in favour of the young Wexford man, which was an incredible achievement.

In the semi-final, he won comfortably wit a 5-0 semi final win over Oleksii Kolbaia of Ukraine. His championship journey has also included a Last 16 win over Poland’s Mateusz Adamski and a Quarter Final victory over Tamás Ónodi of Hungary.

Meawnhile, 57kg Kalib Walshe of Wexford CBS was assured of at least silver following his 5-0 semi final win over Maxim Kovalski of Germany, however, he lost out to a shrewd Italian boxer in the final of the u17 European Championships. In the final, Team Ireland’s Kalib Walshe of Wexford CBS lost out to Daniel Fabi of Italy in a high-tempo final, with the decision going in favour of 4-1 to the Italian boxer.

Kalib had boxed his way to the finals with wins over Raul Heydarli of Azerbaijan in the Last 16 and a Quarter Final win over France’s Djibril Bouaoun.

369 boxers are contesting the tournament from Albania, Azerbaijan, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, England, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden, Turkey and Ukraine.

There’s no doubt that these two young Wexford boxers have bright futures ahead in the ring representing their parish, county, and country.
