Former Hurler Describes How Veteran O’Connor Made Show Of Him In Gym

Mitch Jordan from the Marshalstown club was only delighted to be called into the Wexford Senior hurling panel at just nineteen…

The classy former Wexford hurler remembers one of his first gym sessions with the Wexford Senior hurling squad. Mitch spoke about one of his first gym sessions and about the time he was partnered up with hurling legend George O’Connor.

Speaking to The Hurling Podcast, Jordan said:

“It was great for me to be invited in and to do all that gym work. In one of my first sessions in, I was partnered up with George O’Connor. George is great like, but imagine a lad like me — nineteen years of age — seeing a lad like George O’Connor on the television, a hero, and to be partnered up with him to do gym work.”

“The disaster was that he was so fit and sure George was a giant of a man. I remember doing chin ups in one of the sessions. And sure, I could barely do one, maybe two. Sure the next minute, George gets and does about twenty-five or thirty of them.”

“And sure George was about 37 years of age at the time. He was absolutely making a show of you like.”
