Concern For Wexford As No ICU Beds Currently Vacant In Hospital

There is growing concern in Wexford after it was revealed that there are currently no vacant beds in the Intensive Care Unit of Wexford General Hospital…

At the time of writing , there are no vacant ICU beds in Wexford General Hospital.

This would be concerning for any year.

2020 is different though; unless you’ve been living under a rock, we’re currently fighting the Coronavirus pandemic.

During April and March of this year, we seen a sharp rise of patients in ICU across the county and country.

In April/March, the majority of people in ICU were there due to Covid-19 complications. This time, however, there is growing concern due to the fact that the ICU is mostly being occupied by people who are not Covid-19 positive. People are there for other complications.

In total, there are six ICU beds in Wexford General Hospital. Currently, all are full, and reports have suggested that just one person in this Intensive Care Unit is Covid-19 positive, which is confirmed by data from the Daily Operations Report.

As of 06 October, there were two people currently on trolleys at Wexford General Hospital as per INMO’s Trolley Watch.

Members of the local community, along with local councillors and TD’s, have expressed their concern regarding this issue, especially with Wexford seeing an increase in its incidence rate of Covid-19, as we head into the Winter season.

On Monday, October 5th, Wexford also seen an another sharp rise in the number of people who tested positive for Covid-19.

With increasing levels of Covid-19 across the community, and with NPHET suggesting a ‘Level 5’ lockdown on Monday, this is without doubt an area that needs to be addressed.

Again, we urge people to bring it back to the basics: wash your hands, sanitise, wear a mask, and social distance.
