Wexford Kennedy Cup Squad Named For Semi-Final Against Donegal

The Wexford Kennedy Cup squad will travel to Donegal on Friday for their semi-final clash this Saturday..

After completing Zoom during the lockdown by strictly following the FAI’s Covid-19 guidelines, it was time for the Kennedy Cup to begin.

The Kennedy Cup is one of the most exciting football tournaments on the Irish footballing calendar, as it hosts the top u-14 talent from across the country.

It has been an unusual tournament to date. This year, the tournament followed a format similar to the SFAI (Schoolboy Football Association of Ireland) inter-leagues, rather than the usual residential five days at the University of Limerick. Despite this, no doubt the team are glad to participate in the competition after missing out on so much action due to the pandemic.

In the Kennedy Cup, Wexford were drawn against Kildare, Carlow and Longford.  In their group, Kildare withdrew from the competition shortly after the draw.

Wexford’s tournament started on the 12th of September against Carlow. The game took place in Curracloe and it resulted in a 2-0 home win.

Next, on the 24th of October, Wexford once again played in Curracloe, but this time it was against Longford. In that game, Wexford conceded an early goal, but within a few minutes, they were level. After equalising, dominance ensued and the game ended with another win for Wexford, this time 5-1.

Wexford had topped the group and were now in the cup draw with DDSL, Waterford, Cork, South Belfast, Midlands, Limerick District, and Donegal. The cup draw was made and Wexford got their neighbours, Waterford, in the draw.

That quarter-final game was played on Sunday  14th of November in Waterford RSC. The RSC is a fabulous facility for everyone to play in, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be for Wexford this time around, with Waterford winning 3-0.

Wexford now set their sights on a plate semi-final, where they will face Donegal. The semi-final will take place against Donegal on Saturday December 4th, at 1pm, in Curragh Athletic FC, Killygordon, Donegal.
