Shelmaliers Defy Massive Underdogs Odds To Set Up Croke Park Trip

The Shelmaliers were out in the Leinster Club Football Championship today..

The 2021 Wexford Senior Football Champions were too good for Naomh Mairtin of Louth today despite being tipped as heavy outsiders by many.

Today’s game took place in Louth and the bookies had the Shels as huge underdogs heading into the game, priced at 13/2 earlier in the week and 6/1 just before the game at 12:50pm. On the other hand, Louth champions were priced at 1/10 and at 1/7 directly ahead of the game. There was only one winner in the eyes of the bookies.

The bookies’ odds may have provided the inspiration needed for the Shels to prove the doubters wrong. People from Wexford knew what the Shels would be capable of on their day and with players of the calibre of Brian Malone, Simon Donohoe and Glen Malone, they did not fear the Louth champions and instead, they defied the bookies’ odds.

In the end, the Shels ran out two-point winners, with the game ending on a score-line of 2-06 to 1-07.

The Shelmaliers now march on to the Leinster semi-final against the Kildare champions, Naas, which takes place as part of a double header in Croke Park on December 18th 2021. Today, in another quarter-final, Naas impressively and comprehensively defeated the Wicklow champions, Blessington on a score-line of 4-11 to 1-07.

In the other semi-final on December 18th in Croke Park, Dublin champions Kilmacud Crokes will battle it out against Portarlington of Laois.

There will be a lot of excitement building for the Shels as they make the journey to Croke Park. Even though they will likely be the underdogs once again for their clash against Naas, perhaps it’s a tag that suits them.
