Shelmaliers Are Huge Underdogs Ahead Of This Weekend’s Leinster Championship Clash

The Wexford club football champions are out in action on the weekend…

The Shelmaliers will be hoping to do a little bit better than the Wexford Senior hurling champions when they’re out in the Leinster Club Football Championship this weekend.

The Shelmaliers were crowned victorious in the Wexford Senior hurling championship for 2021 after they defeated Gusserane-O’Rahilly’s.

Now, their attention turns to the Leinster Senior Football Club championship, which takes place this Sunday, at 1pm, in Geraldines GAA Club, in Haggardstown in Louth.

The Shelmaliers will be facing the Louth Senior football champions, Naomh Mairtin (St Martins) in the 2021 Leinster Senior Football Club Championship quarter-final.

Ahead of the highly-anticipated outing for the Wexford club, the major Irish bookmakers including PaddyPower and Betway Sports, have released their betting odds for the clash.

There’s a real sense of anticipation building for this clash after the Shels defeated Gusserane in the Wexford Senior Football final.

The Shelmaliers looked dominant throughout, and with inter-county players of the calibre of Simon Donohoe, Glen Malone, and Brian Malone, the Shels could fancy their chances in this competition.

Despite this, the bookies do not think they have a chance. The bookies have the Shelmaliers as huge underdogs and they can be secured at a big price of 13/2, while on the other hand, the Louth champions, St Martins, are tipped at an astonishing 1/10. For those who believe this could be a close encounter, the draw can be secured at 14/1.

In the Martins (Louth champions) previous game, they racked up an impressive 2-16 to 1-05 score-line against Calrow champions, Rathvilly.

In that game, they looked solid in defence and fearless in attack, which could be a sole reason why the bookies have them as clear favourites heading into the game.

Should the Shelmaliers defeat the Louth champions, they’ll face either the Kildare or Wicklow champions in the Leinster club football championship semi-final. All going well, the Shels will have a close eye on the Naas versus Blessington quarter-final which takes place this weekend too.

A win in the quarter-final against the Louth champions (St Martins) would see the Shels in a Leinster football semi-final double-header scheduled to take place in Croke Park just one week before Christmas

Although the major Irish bookmakers like BoyleSports and Betway Sports may have the Shels as clear underdogs for the game, the public across Wexford know exactly what the Shels are capable of on their day.

Make sure to keep a close eye on Wexford Weekly as the clash comes closer. We’ll be listening out for potential injuries and positional changes.
