Belts For Two Wexford Natives At Celtic Box Cup Today

Two Wexford natives were victorious at the Celtic Box Cup today…

A total of four Wexford natives were representing the Wexford County team at the finals of the Celtic Box Cup today in the Dungarvan Community Sports Centre, Waterford.

The four Wexford natives competing in the finals included David Kennedy, Dean Walsh, Mike Morrisey and Byron Jordan.

David Kennedy, a member of Gorey Boxing Club, won his final bout by a unanimous decision, with the score-cards reading 5-0. Kennedy was fighting at 80kg in the Men’s Senior A division against James Whelan, a member of Docklands BC in Dublin. Leading up to the final, Kennedy was equally impressive, winning the quarter-final by a first round- stoppage and winning the semi-final by another unanimous decision.

Meanwhile, Wexford’s Dean Walsh was also fighting today at the Celtic Box Cup and he proudly walked away from Dungarvan with the belt.

Four-time elite title winner Walsh was fighting Wayne Kelly of Ballynacargy BC in the Men’s Elite division at 71kg. Walsh won the final bout 4-1 on the judges scorecards and was equally as impressive throughout the tournament.

It wasn’t to be for Byron Jordan, who lost out to today’s final against Karl Sheridan in the Senior A 57kg division. It was a similar story for Mike Morrisey who came up against an impressive figure in Martin McDonagh in the Senior B division at 92+kg.
