A Wexford boxer was crowned All-Ireland Champion on Friday night…
Gorey native, David ‘Bomber’ Kennedy, made history at the National Stadium in Dublin on Friday.
A large support base from Wexford attended the finals at Dublin’s National Stadium to cheer on the Wexford man and they didn’t leave disappointed.
Kennedy fought Carlow’s Luke Walsh in the final of the Senior Men’s 80kg competition. Walsh fights out of the Raging Bull Boxing club in Carlow and although he did live up to his boxing club’s name with his strong heart and determination, he did not have enough for the classy Kennedy.
Kennedy oozed in class and confidence throughout the fight and that was represented on the judges’ scorecards, giving a 5-0 unanimous decision in Kennedy’s favour.
Along with winning the National title in front of his family and friends, history was also made. He became the first male boxer out of Gorey Boxing Club to bring home a Senior National title since his corner-man, Niall Murray, did it sixteen years ago.
It marks a successful year for Kennedy, having already previously won the Leinster title and then the Celtic Box Cup in Dungarvan back in September.
Kennedy will celebrate for the weekend, but it’ll be back to work then as he sets his sights on preparing for the National Elites which takes place in late January. The Elites will no doubt be a step up, but the sky is the limit for the Gorey man.
