The 2023 Version: The Top 6 Players In The Wexford Football Premier Division

As you might have anticipated, this list is dominated by the two best teams in Wexford currently, North End United and Gorey Rangers…

It comes following the publication of the 2022 ‘top six players article’, a somewhat divisive list with Wexford football fans, sparking a lot of online discussion.

There are a couple of newcomers to the list while a few remain from the last edition. Lists like these are often divisive, so put any changes you’d make in the comments section of our social media channels.

6. Ivan Meegan – Ferns United

Ivan is a new addition to this list. He has been vital to Ferns’ rise up the table this year. He also scored an important goal in their recent Wexford Cup semi final victory vs Moyne Rangers. He was also nominated for player of the year for the Premier Division last season. Ivan will be crucial to Ferns’ chances in the Cup final in a few weeks.

5. Stephen Moloney – Gorey Rangers

Another new addition. Stephen is equally comfortable in centre back or centre midfield. He played for Rangers for the majority of his adult career and  has been a mainstay in the Rangers team that has performed well over the last few years. With two Wexford Cup winners medals with Rangers, Stephen has been in fine form again this year as Rangers look to win the Premier Division.

4. Stephen Kinsella – Gorey Rangers

Stephen is our first player to reappear on the list and in the same spot no less! Not much has changed since the last list with Stephen, he is still the deep lying playmaker looking to make Gorey Rangers tick. He has scored a number of big goals this year to win Rangers games. He added another Wexford Cup winners medal last year to along with 2018. Stephen will be looking to add the Premier Division this year.

3. Paul Murphy – North End United

Paul is another player to reappear on the list. Still the talisman for North End as he has been for the previous number of years as he and the team has collected medal after medal. It has been an injury plagued year for him unfortunately as he has not played as much football as either he or North End would have liked. But when he has been fit he has still been a top, top player. Started his playing career with Ipswich U18s before moving back home and representing a number of Irish sides including Waterford FC and Wexford Youths/FC. Paul was a member of the Wexford side who won the SSE Airtricity First Division in 2015.

2. Paul Murphy – Gorey Rangers

Another Paul Murphy is added to the list but this one is from Gorey. Paul is a commanding centre back who is comfortable with the ball at his feet. Paul represented Bray Wanderers at underage before returning to Gorey Rangers. He as made a big addition to an already strong Rangers panel and has been a mainstay since his return in 2022. He was a member of the Rangers cup winning side in 2022 also.

1. Gary Delaney – North End

The number one player remains the same on the updated version of the list!

Another member of North End’s highly successful period. Gary, who is a centre back, is tall, strong and dominant in the air. He is also very capable of playing out from the back and being a ball-playing centre half. He has been a crucial member of the North End squad for years, winning endless medals.

Delaney is another player who has a number of appearances in the SSE Airtricity league, representing Waterford FC and Wexford Youths/Wexford FC. Delaney was another member of the Wexford Youths side that won the First Division in 2015.
