Opinion: The Top Six Players In The Wexford Football League

There’s a lot of talent across the Wexford Football League…

In this article, new Wexford Weekly columnist, Adam Connor, lists who he believes are the best players who currently play their football in Premier Division of the Wexford Football League.

6. Chris Kenny – Shamrock Rovers

Chris Kenny plays for Shamrock Rovers in Enniscorthy and he is a box-to-box midfielder with an eye for goal. He represented Wexford Youths (Now Wexford FC) in the SSE Airtricity League and got himself a move to Sligo Rovers. He is strong in the air, has a great engine, and can get forward into the box and get himself a goal.

5. Charlie Heffernan – North End United

The only goalkeeper on the list and Charlie is a top one. Not only is he a tall commanding presence in the North End goal, but he is an excellent shot stopper as you would expect from a keeper of his quality. However, what really sets Heffernan apart is his distribution. His passing, both long and short, are a vital asset to North End and in particular their counter-attacks.

4. Stephen Kinsella – Gorey Rangers

Stephen Kinsella is another midfielder. Stephen is a deep lying playmaker and the lynchpin of the Gorey Rangers midfield. He is essential to Rangers’ chances with his clever passing and ability to dictate the tempo of a game. He has represented Rangers all his career and was part of the Wexford Cup winning team in 2018.

3. Ricky Fox – Shamrock Rovers

Another midfielder here. Ricky is a versatile player who can do a job in any role. He adds some class and flair to the Shamrock Rovers side.

He is a creative presence for Shamrock Rovers and continually chips in with goals and assists. This creative flair was also on display in the Gaelic Football County final a few years ago when playing for the Starlights when he produced two dummies one after another and scored an excellent point. No doubt, he is a top player in the Shamrock Rovers team, while he has also represented Wexford FC in a couple of stints.

2. Paul Murphy – North End United

Paul Murphy is our striker on the list. The talisman for North End over the past few years in their great run of success winning competition after competition and Murphy was at the forefront of that success. Capable of reaching exceptional numbers with his goal scoring, he is far from just a poacher. He can drop deep and be a creative playmaker for his side. Started his playing career with Ipswich u18s before moving back home and representing a number of Irish sides including Waterford FC and Wexford Youths/Wexford FC. Murphy was a crucial member of the Wexford side who won the SSE Airtricity First Division in 2015.

1. Gary Delaney – North End United

Another member of North End’s highly successful period is the number one player on our list. Gary Delaney, who is a centre back, is tall, strong and dominant in the air. He is also very capable of playing out from the back and being a ball-playing centre half. He has been a crucial member of the North End squad for years, winning endless medals.

Delaney is another player who has a number of appearances in the SSE Airtricity league, representing Waterford FC and Wexford Youths/Wexford FC. Delaney was another member of the Wexford Youths side that won the First Division in 2015.
