Tommy Walsh Thinks GAA Relegation Rule Should Be Changed If Wexford Go To Joe McDonagh

After Wexford’s dismal loss to Westmeath in the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship, they have been placed in a position few would have expected…

There will be a lot of eyes on the final round of the Leinster Championship next weekend. If Antrim beat Westmeath, and if Kilkenny beat Wexford, those results would relegate Wexford to the Joe McDonagh Cup and out of the Leinster Hurling Championship.

Speaking to Off The Ball, Kilkenny legend Tommy Walsh said that the rule would need to be looked at if those results went that way.

“They’re talking about promoting hurling the last couple of weeks. If that does happen, you’d be looking at changing that rule maybe. Because we can’t have Wexford down – out of the Liam McCarthy Cup. That’s no disrespect to any other team. They’re a hurling traditional powerhouse. You go back to the Nickey Rackards, the Tony Dorans, come up to the Martin Storeys, the Liam Dunnes. Listen it might not happen, a lot of results have to happen for that to happen,” Tommy Walsh said.

Should the GAA decide to change the rule on result on Wexford being relegated, it would likely cause uproar with the other previously relegated teams such as Offaly, Westmeath, and Laois for example.

Wexford will be hoping that it won’t come to that though. Instead, they’ll do the business against Kilkenny next week in their attempts to avoid relegation to the Joe McDonagh Cup.

The Wexford chairman has called on all Wexford supporters to pack Wexford Park in their final game and to show them the support that they need to get over the line.
