Former Kilkenny hurler reckons Kilkenny will want to assert mental dominance over Wexford

The Wexford v Kilkenny match will take place this weekend…

There’s a low mood around the county at the moment following the loss to Westmeath, but Wexford will need to dust themselves down quickly with the Kilkenny match quickly approaching.

Wexford will need a win; a loss against Kilkenny, coupled with an Antrim win over Westmeath, will see Wexford relegated to the Joe McDonagh Cup for the following season.

Former Kilkenny hurler, Paul Murphy, was speaking on Off The Ball about the Wexford-Kilkenny match this weekend.

“There’s a rivalry between us and Wexford. They’ve beaten us in Leinster finals in 2019, and we heard about it then in Kilkenny. Kilkenny won’t be going into this match thinking ‘okay we’re getting ready for a Leinster final’. They’ll want to go down there and establish a mental dominance to say we have our ups and downs – but we picked ourselves up.”

“It’ll be a huge mental battle. There’s going to be a lot of spirit shown to win that.”

Murphy, who retired in 2021, also stated that Kilkenny will want to “bury them” and “put Wexford in a very sticky situation.”

Both Tom Dempsey and Keith Rossiter are calling on Wexford supporters to travel in numbers to the Wexford-Kilkenny match this weekend and to ensure that we do not just throw in the towel now.
