A Wexford boxer was fighting in the Haringey Box Cup last weekend…
David ‘Bomber’ Kennedy, who fights out of Gorey Boxing Club in Wexford, travelled to London last week to compete in the Haringey Box Cup as part of the Team Ireland squad.
In the quarter-final of the competition, Kennedy fought Ian Mackin from Newry. Kennedy stopped the Down native in the first minute of the very first round, with Mackin’s corner throwing in the towel.
The semi-final was a little bit more difficult as it went the distance. Here, he fought Benson Adeyinka. Although it proved more challenging, Kennedy won the fight 5-0 unanimously on the judge’s scorecards.
In the final, Kennedy fought last year’s Haringey Box Cup champion, Olademeji Shittu. This fight again went the distance, but the judge’s crowned Shittu the winner via a split decision.
While Kennedy was out to claim the gold, bringing home silver is no small feat either.
Speaking after his performance, Kennedy stated that he’s looking forward to seeing what’s next for him in the boxing world:
“Happy how I performed over the weekend. I gave it my all and have no regrets. It was such an honour to box for my country – no better feeling in the world. I’m looking forward to see what’s next for me,” he said.
