Two Wexford natives win titles at Ireland’s National Elite boxing championship

There was success for two Wexford natives this weekend…

Wexford town boxer, Dean Walsh, won his fight at the National Stadium on Saturday evening. Dean Walsh (St Ibar’s/Joseph’s, Wexford) defeated Eugene McKeever (Holy Family Drogheda), with the judges scoring it 3-2 in favour of the Wexford man.

After the fight, Dean’s uncle, Billy Walsh, presented his nephew with the trophy. Billy, another Wexford native, is head coach of the USA Boxing team.

Meanwhile, Bunclody native Shauna Kearney won an elite title in the 70kg women’s division. Shauna’s opponent was forced to give the walkover in the final. It was Shauna’s sixth national title win, but her first Elite title success.

Speaking on her success, Kearney said:

“A walkover is not how I wanted to win my first elite title but best believe I’ve trained hard for this and I know I deserve it! I was prepared to fight as I’ve put my blood, sweat and tears into boxing this past year and will continue to do so. The first of many.”
