Leinster GAA recently confirmed the fixtures for the pre-season competitions.
The O’Byrne Cup is the Leinster GAA pre-season football competition.
John Hegarty’s Wexford Senior footballers will open their campaign to their near neighbours. On Wednesday, Jan 3rd, the Wexford Senior footballers will take on Wicklow in Chadwicks Wexford Park.
The losers of that clash will be placed into the ‘Shield’ of the O’Byrne Cup. It means at least two games are guaranteed. If Wexford lose to Wicklow, they will take on the losers of Laois/Offaly in the semi-final of the Shield competition.
A win for Wexford against Wicklow will see them placed into the quarter-final stages of the competition, where they will take on the winners of Carlow/Kildare. The quarter-final is scheduled to take place three days later, on Saturday, 6th January 2024.
If Wexford overcome both Wicklow and then either Laois/Offaly, they will take on the winners of Laois/Offaly/Dublin in the O’Byrne Cup semi-final on Saturday, 13th January 2024. A win in the semi-final would see them face the winners of Meath/Louth or Longford/Westmeath.
Although the O’Byrne Cup is just a pre-season competition, John Hegarty will be hoping to start the campaign off well, along side drafting in multiple new players to the Senior set-up.
Meanwhile, in related news, the Wexford Senior hurlers’ Walsh Cup fixtures for 2024 have also been confirmed by Leinster GAA.
