The National Transport Authority (NTA) has written this week to Rosslare Municipal District Labour candidate Damien Corish to acknowledge his submission to save the 370 Rosslare Waterford bus which stops at Bridgetown…
Bridgetown is served by Bus Eireann 370 once a day return service as a replacement for the rail service that was suspended in September 2010. The proposal to reconfigure bus services in South Wexford will divert all passenger services to Wexford.
Speaking to Wexford Weekly, local election candidate Damien Corish said:
“I have listened to many people complain about the proposed changes to route 370 on my canvas. The direct service each morning allows students to get to college lectures in SETU on time and out patients arrive at Waterford University Hospital by 9 AM. While there are alternatives on the return journey from Waterford the early morning departure from Bridgetown is crucial for students in the area,” he said.
Mr Corish also said that the alternative to commuting for students is to pay through the nose for student accommodation in Waterford. He argues that South Wexford is considered socially disadvantaged and that any increase in costs will place a huge burden on parents and students from the area.
“I made an extensive submission to the NTA asking that the proposed timetable change be deferred until such a time as rail services along the South Wexford line are restored. I am pleased that the points I made are being considered,” he said.
Mr Corish said that he took time out of my campaign to lodge a considered submission to the NTA during the week. I support the provision of public transport in rural Wexford. This will allow access to basic services without the need to rely on cars.
“I have no issues with the rest of their plan, there’s a lot of merit in it and it will benefit many however this should not be at the expense of students or people going to outpatients appointments like the fracture clinic in Waterford University Hospital. said that the proposal can be found on the NTA website nationaltransport.ie.”
Damien Corish is running for the Labour party in the upcoming local elections. To see the list of other candidates, you can check out our previous article here.
