Success for Wexford’s CúChulainn Archers at Harbour House in Athy on Sunday

It was an early start for the seven members of CúChulainn Archers Wexford who travelled to Harbour House Archery Club in Athy, the venue for the Double 720 Round on the Bank Holiday Sunday…

While the day started out really sunny at 6.30am in Wexford, there was pretty dense haze at Harbour House. However, once it burned off, the day proved to be extremely hot with Sun Block being in great demand and a lot of red noses shone through many a windscreen on the way home at the end of the day.

While the principal distances for this competition are 70m for Recurve and 50m for Compound and Barebow, there were different distances for beginner and novice archers. This is a great thing to have available as it helps keep those archers interested while they train for the World Archery recognized distances.

The seven archers who competed from CúChulainn at the Harbour House competition ranged from absolute beginners through to experienced archers.

In Compound Women category, CúChulainn’s Emma Crosbie took the Silver and Lenka Halouzkova took the Bronze in her first competition and also her first World Archery Award with Deirdre Ní Dhubhgaill of Wexford Archers finishing in fourth place.

In the heavily contested Senior Compound Men category, Éamonn Rogers of CúChulainn missed out of the Bronze medal by the smallest of margins, coming in 4th place having lost out to fellow Wexford man Finn Roche from Glynn, who is a member of Harbour House Archery Club.CúChulainn’s beginner Kevin Flynn did really well in his first competition and shooting the full World Archery recognized Recurve Distance of 70m.

.CúChulainn’s David Ryan, Barebow Men, took the Gold and was joined on the podium by fellow club member Sean O’Brien who is another complete beginner at his first competition and who took the Silver medal.

Yet another complete beginner, David Ryan’s young son Conor, (Barebow) age just 10 years and in his first competition shot extremely well, scoring over 1150 points and winning the Gold medal in his category having only taking the sport up a matter of weeks ago.

Another Wexfordman, Slaney Archers Padraig Doyle, from Duncormick won the Gold medal and took three Irish Records (subject to confirmation) in Barebow Men’s category.

Everyone agreed that it was great weekend, and all headed to their respective homes tired, sunburnt and happy.
