A new professional boxer from Wexford will be boxing again soon…
Dean “Speedy” Gonzalez Furlong has a professional boxing record of 1-0, but he will be hoping to make that two from two in Belfast on August 3rd.
The 21-year-old orthodox fighter made his debut, which was viewed as somewhat out of the blue, when he fought Hungary’s Gabor Kovacs in late April of this year. In that fight, he secured a knock-out win in Round 1.
In his second professional fight, he will take on Paul Scaife, which will be on the exciting McKenna vs. Mimoune undercard, promoted by Conlan Boxing. 33-year old Englishman Scaife has a professional record of 1 win and 31 losses. A journey-man used as a stepping stone for Furlong and for him to put on a show in front of the big Belfast crowd. Anything less than a dominant win, considering his opponent’s credentials, would be terrible.
Gonzalez-Furlong’s father used to run Wexford CBS before they emigrated to Spain when the new pro was just five years of age. In his first pro fight, Dean donned the purple and gold colours of Wexford when he was in the ring.
The Wexford CBS Boxing Club have called on people from Wexford and beyond to get behind Dean in his upcoming fight:
“Please support our very own Dean Furlong who will be boxing in Belfast on August 3rd. This will be Dean’s 2nd professional fight. The night will prove to be a great night of boxing with a spectacular program set out for the night,” they said.
