A Wexford boxer has made it two from two in the professional boxing ranks…
Dean ‘Speedy’ Gonzalez Furlong, who hails from Wexford but currently lives and lived a lot of his life with family in Alicante, Spain, secured his second professional win in boxing recently.
The 21-year old Wexford man fought English man, Paul Scaife, on the undercard of Tryone McKenna’s repeat bout with Mimoune in the SSE Arena in Belfast on Saturday night.
On the night, Furlong sported the purple and gold – the colours strongly associated with his hometown, Wexford.
After four rounds of boxing, it went to the judge’s decision. Furlong won by an unanimous decision on points, winning 40-36 in the eyes of the judges in Belfast.
Dean Furlong is being promoted by Conlan Boxing, the brainchild of former Oylmpian boxer and professional boxer Michael Conlon, alongside his brother – Jamie Conlan.
Speaking after the fight, Dean said:
“My Da wanted me to get the four rounds in. I wanted to get him out beforehand, but I was only looking for a good performance. We knew Paul was a tough guy, he’s rarely been stopped. I was hoping to get it, it didn’t come, but I had a good performance and I’m happy,” he said.
He noted that he’ll be hoping to get another fight or two by the end of the year. Furlong will be hoping to continue his winning streak and to keep his record ticking over, eyeing up some bigger fights in the future.
