Well-known Wexford shop to close down after almost 3 decades

A well-known shop in County Wexford is set to close down…

After almost 3 decades, 28 years in business in Gorey town, the Gwalia Stores is set to close their doors for the final time.

Owner Maureen placed a sign on the front of their door just this week highlighting the inpending closure of the popular and historic small shop on Gorey’s main street.

“It is with great regret we are closing down. I would like to thank all my wonderful customers over the past 28 years for their support and friendship they have shown me over the years. Thank you so much,” the sign on the door reads.

While the Gwalia store may have been small in stature, it was an excellent community hub and a place where all Gorey locals would have paid a visit and shared memories there. The reason for the shop’s closeure is due to retirements.

The Gorey Fennell family have owned the premises from the mid 1800s.

Larry and Carol Cullen also ran the shop for a period before Maureen and Martin took over and built up their trade and loyal customers.

On social media, users were quick to offer their best wishes for the future.

“It was an integral part of Gorey’s history for many years. Will be sorely missed,” one user commented.

Another user wrote: “It’s a sad day for Gorey that it’s closing down so much childhood memories going in for sweets… Even today I love that shop.”
