Wexford’s Sophie Becker just misses out on Olympic bronze medal

Wexford’s Sophie Becker, along with her relay team, just missed out on an Olympic medal yesterday…

Becker, who made up part of the quartet running in the 4x400m relay, was representing Team Ireland.

Unfortunately, the women’s relay team just missed out on an Olympic bronze medal, coming in an agonising fourth place.

Rhasidat Adeleke, Phil Healy, Sharlene Mawsdsley and Wexford native Sophie Becker just missed out on bronze after crossing the line in a time of 3:19.90.

Speaking after the race to RTE the following morning, Wexford’s Sophie Becker said:

“There was a mix of emotions. Over time, we realise that it was a really good run. I think that the only time 3:19 wouldn’t have medalled at the Olympics was 1998. 3:19 was incredible. It was a phenomenal run, something we’re proud of. It’s still bittersweet, but we’re seeing the more sweet side to it now” she said.

Although no medals will be coming back to Ireland, it was a mighty performance that we can all be proud of and it does bode well for the future of Irish athletics.
