Multitude of Wexford people to represent county at Hurling for Cancer match

Similar to previous years, there will be a significant Wexford representation at the next Hurling for Cancer game….

The match, which always goes down incredibly well with GAA fanatics, will take place this evening (Monday 12 August) in Dr Cullen Park in Carlow.

Throw-in for the game will be at 7pm.

The match offers an opportunity to see current heroes and former legends of the game take the field. In true GAA fashion, time is allowed for chatting with the players, getting autographs signed, and getting pictures with stars taken once the final whistle is blown.

Hurling For Cancer Research was established in 2011 when leading flat trainer and hurling fanatic, Jim Bolger challenged champion jockey Davy Russell and his weight room colleagues to a game of hurling against him and his staff all in support of raising funds and awareness for cancer research.

Since then, the event has helped raise in excess of €1.3 Million towards an overall investment from the Irish Cancer Society of €30 Million in life-changing clinical trials and cutting-edge cancer research studies.

Each year the Society funds over 100 cancer researchers across Ireland, thanks to the support of events such as Hurling For Cancer Research.

On Davy Russel’s best fifteen, Wexford star Lee Chin is named to start at centre-forward alongside the likes of Patrick Horgan, Peter Duggan, and David Fitzgerald. On the bench for Russel’s side also sees a strong Wexford representation. The bench includes Conor McDonald, Liam OgMcGovern, Jack O’Connor, Rory O’Connor, Mikey Fogarty, Jamie Codd, Kevin Foley, and Johnny Fogarty.

On the opposition team, called Jim Bolger’s Stars, will see further Wexford representation. Legendary Wexford goalkeeper, Damien Fitzhenry, is named at number one and starts from the goal line. Larry O’Gorman and 1996 All-Ireland winning captain, Martin Storey, have been named on Jim Bolger’s bench. The team is co-managed by Liam Griffin and Limerick manager, John Kiely. Jim Bolger and Dave Bernie act as their selectors.

It’s great to see such a strong Wexford representation at this event, an event which continues to develop each year.
