You know it’s big GAA news when Buff Egan gets wind of it…
Buff Egan, who is from Kerry, is a GAA fanatic. Over the past several years, he has become somewhat of a GAA sensation. Everywhere in Ireland he goes, he’s met with fans singing his name and his praises. The Kerry man has a significant social media following.
Not only does he share videos and updates, he also shares his opinions and he’s never one to filter his words; he simply says it how it is.
Some big news in the world of GAA came last weekend in the Wexford Intermediate Hurling Championship.
HWH Bunclody defeated Fethard St Mogues after extra time. Penalties were needed to decide the game after the teams could not be separated in the Wexford Intermediate Hurling Championship quarter-final, and HWH Bunclody had emerged victorious on penalties.
Or so they thought.
Fethard had appealed the result of the game. Significant video evidence was presented to Wexford GAA and the Wexford CCC from the Fethard contingent.
The Wexford CCC then overturned the result based on this video evidence, ruling that Fethard St Mogues would advance into the semi-final stages of the competition. It was news that created national headlines, and now, Buff Egan has weighed in on the matter, stating that its the height of “skulduggery.”
Speaking to his hundreds and thousands of followers online, Buff Egan said:
“There’s awful skulduggery going on above Wexford. HWH Bunclody bet Fethard in a penalty shoot out after the match finished level. The men from HWH went away preparing for the semi-final, only to be told after the match that Fethard won by a point. But sure, if Fethard won by a point, why would it go to penalties? That makes no sense. The men from Bunclody won the match on penalties and then they were told oh actually, you didn’t win.”
Egan believes that if there’s any fair play, the match should be brought to a replay:
“It’s obvious that the ref made a balls of it. 100% it should be a replay. If there’s any fair play above in Wexford, this has to be a replay. It’s the height of blaggarding. To be thrown out of the championship like this? Any fair play? Nah man,” he said.
The ruling has definitely split opinion. Some would argue that it’s only fair that Fethard progress if it was an error on the official’s behalf. Others would argue that HWH Bunclody won the match and that it’s not a good precedent when games can be played out and overturned like this. It will be interesting to see what happens next with this.
