It’s safe to say that this was a messy one that Wexford GAA will want to forget quite quickly…
The Wexford Intermediate hurling championship gained headlines for all the wrong reasons over the past two weeks.
After extra-time in the game between Bunclody and Fethard, the teams could not be separated. Penalties were needed to decide the clash, with the men from HWH Bunclody winning.
However, Fethard had appealed the decision to the Wexford CCC. The Wexford CCC then controversially overturned the result of the match and awarded the game to Fethard.
HWH Bunclody had then taken that decision to the Leinster Council, who decided that another committee in Wexford GAA would be needed to hear a proposal should Fethard decide to appeal again.
Fethard made the decision to re-draft their appeal. The new committee who heard the re-drafted appeal consisted of John Horan, a former President of the GAA, alongside Liam Keane, Chairman of the National Standing Committee on Playing Rules, and Willie O’Connor, Secretary of the Munster Hearings Committee.
Following the hearing which took place at Chadwicks Wexford Park on Wednesday at 7pm, a decision was made to award HWH Bunclody the game and Fethard’s re-drafted appeal was unsuccessful.
It means that, at the time of writing, HWH Bunclody have now made it to the semi-finals of the Wexford Intermediate Hurling Championship. They will take on St James in the semi-final, while Rathnure will await the winners in the final, after they defeated Buffers Alley in the other semi-final. At the time of writing, HWH Bunclody are set to take on St James’ on Saturday, November 2nd, at 3pm in Wexford Park.
However, this story may not be over just yet as Fethard can still appeal Wexford CCC’s new decision to a higher authority, such as the DRA for example.
There’s no doubt that it was a very messy situation and one that divided opinion across not just the county, but across the country.
