Phil Coulter responds to Wexford musician’s viral TikTok hit on ‘The town I loved so well’

A Wexford singer songwriter living in Edinburgh, Scotland, has been receiving a lot of love on TikTok for his cover of the classic Irish ballad ‘The Town I Loved So Well’…

Chris Berry released the rendition earlier this week and the video has already amassed 85,000 views, almost 3000 likes and over 400 comments.

‘The Town I Loved So Well’ was written by Derry-born musician Phil Coulter about his childhood and the effects of the Troubles on his home county. The song has become an Irish standard and is perhaps best associated with Luke Kelly and the Dubliners but has also been covered by a variety of Irish and English artists including Paddy Reilly, Johnny Logan, Dexys Midnight Runners, The High Kings and Nathan Carter.

Berry’s cover of the ballad has touched the hearts of many and has even got the approval of Coulter himself. In a Facebook message to Berry, Coulter wrote the following:

“Well done Chris. I’ve always said that a singer can pay no greater compliment to a songwriter than to sing one of his songs………it’s particularly true when you sing a version that is so true to the original. Thank you.”

Berry was ecstatic with the response from the folk legend behind hits like ‘Puppet on a String’ and ‘Congratulations’. He said Coulter’s reply “made everything to me” as someone who was raised on his songs.

Berry previously featured in Wexford Weekly several months ago when we interviewed him ahead of his performance on the gig rig as part of the 2024 Fleadh Cheoil.
