The Wexford boxing scene is on the rise…
Along with the likes of David Kennedy, Dean Walsh, and Dean Gonzalez Furlong in the pro ranks, the amateur scene is continuing to grow too.
Also testament to this is the fact that a young Wexford girl, Kayleigh Byrne, was recently selected on Team Ireland to box for her country against Wales – along with multiple other young boxers performing well in the National Stadium in the All Ireland series lately.
Just yesterday, another young boxer – Eoin Kennedy from Gorey Boxing Club, became the club’s newest Leinster title winner. In the Leinster title fight which took place on Sunday, he defeated a talented boxer from St Conleth’s Boxing Club in Kildare. He won his semi-final the previous day against a young boxer from Paulstown in Kilkenny
After the win, his club – Gorey Boxing Club – said:
“Eoin won all his fights in Leinster on a unanimous decision by sticking to the game plan of clever boxing. Hit and not get hit. Well done Eoin the club’s newest Leinster champion and best of luck in the nationals. Everyone at the club is delighted and so proud of you,” they said.
Kennedy was not the only Wexford representative to bring back a Leinster title either. Wexford’s Mary Furlong won her sixth Leinster title yesterday in the 52kg division. Even though she was out with an injury for the past eight months, she won the fight by a unanimous decision.

Kennedy and Furlong will now be looking forward to the National stages of the competition, where they’ll be looking to take home more silverware to their clubs.
