Multiple Wexford boxers claim national title silverware

The boxing scene is truly on the rise in Wexford…

Testament to that is the fact that multiple young Wexford boxers claimed national silverware last night at the National Stadium in Dublin.

In total, 36 champions were crowned after the conclusion of the 2025 National championships on Friday night, in what was an excellent night showcasing some of the best of Irish amateur boxing.

Wexford’s Sean Kelly (St Abbans/Kilmyshall), who fights at 48kg, beat Kane Bacon (Saints) by a unanimous decision on the judge’s scorecard, winning 5-0 and getting his hand raised. It marked Kelly’s fifth time getting his hand raised as Irish national boxing champion.

Meanwhile, Gorey Boxing Club’s Kayleigh Byrne defeated fellow Wexford native, Mary Furlong (Na Fianna, Wexford town), to claim national glory, also by a unanimous decision. Last night’s win meant that it’s Kayleigh’s fifth time winning the National title.

After the fight, the Gorey Boxing Club coaches said:

“Kayleigh beat a girl who has never been beaten in Ireland before tonight on a unanimous decision. The very talented Mary Furlong from Na Fianna is a seriously talented kid and will come again. Kayleigh was just on another planet tonight,” they said.

After last night’s win, Kayleigh’s attention now swiftly turns to the Youth Internationals with Team Ireland, where she will fight an opponent from India.

Another Wexford native, Oisin Goff, who fights out of the Sacre Coeur Boxing Club in Enniscorthy, beat Owen Lawrence (Ballybough), 5-0 in the 54kg division. It was Oisin’s fourth time winning national silverware.

On Sunday, more Wexford boxers were crowned All-Ireland champions.

Sophie Cullen, who boxes out of South East Boxing Club, won national silverware in the 52kg Division for the “National Junior 1 Championships.”

Shortly after that same day, Wexford town-based Kalib Walshe who fights out of Wexford CBS, took on Conan McSorley (Two Castles) in his bid to claim national glory tonight. Walshe’s win meant that he can now proudly call himself a 7 time’s National Champion.

In related boxing news, Dean Gonzalez Furlong made it 4-0 in the professional boxing ranks with a win in his latest pro boxing bout. Another two professional Wexford boxers also have fights coming up. Both David ‘Bomber’ Kennedy and Dean Walsh will be fighting in the National Stadium in April.
