Wexford Senior hurlers handed boost for upcoming Galway clash

The Wexford Senior hurlers have been handed a boost for their next Leinster Championship game…

In the opening round of the Leinster Senior hurling championship, Wexford defeated Davy Fitzgerald’s Antrim in Wexford Park. This win was followed by a trip to Parnell Park, which seen the Yellowbellies lose out to Dublin in a high-scoring encounter.

Against Dublin, Wexford’s momentum was killed after they conceded three quick-fire goals in the space of four minutes. They came courtesy of a penalty – which should not have been awarded – and then two quick goals from their strong full-forward John Hetherton. Manager Keith Rossiter brought out long-serving Wexford hurler, Liam Ryan, in a bid to curtail the St Vincent’s club man in the final fifteen minutes – and all things considered, he succeeded in doing so.

With Ryan now back within the action, Wexford have been handed a boost with his return; unless he receives another injury blow, one can assume that the Rapparees club man will be holding the full-back line for the clash against Galway.

Another player who is set to make his return to action is Naomh Eanna clubman, Conor McDonald. Although Wexford have racked up some impressive score-lines in their previous two Championship outings, there is no doubt that they are missing a physical presence up top, with captain Lee Chin often pushing out the field.

Both Ryan and McDonald will not only add a much-needed physical presence, but between them, they’ll add two decades of experience to the youthful Wexford team. While Ryan will be steadying the ship at the back, McDonald will be hoping to feature in the game against Galway – adding much needed fire-power up front.

Should McDonald feature against Galway, it would mark his first appearance for Wexford during the 2025 hurling calendar year. He missed out the entirety of the Allianz League campaign and the opening two Leinster hurling games due to undergoing a hip operation in January.

With Wexford’s loss to Dublin, their trip to Galway has become a vital game on the calendar to keep their hopes of a date in the Leinster final alive. The Galway vs Wexford game will take place in Salthill on Saturday, May 10th 2025.

After the Galway clash, Wexford will have two home games. They will be against Offaly in Round 4, and then the penultimate game against near-neighbours Kilkenny in the final group game.
