Fundraiser launched to allow four Wexford athletes to compete abroad

A fundraising drive has been launched to allow four young Wexford athletes to compete abroad…

Four young Wexford athletes have been picked to represent Ireland in Abu Dhabi in July at the IMMAF Youth World Championship.

One of the young athletes is Fraser McDonald and his mother, Janette, said that:

“I’m so proud of Fraser for his dedication and hard work over the past year. I can’t wait for Fraser to show his skills to the world,” she said.

Janette has told us that while the opportunity is brilliant – as a single mother of two – she needs all the help that she can get to make this opportunity a viable one.

For Fraser – and the other young athletes – this will be a Golden opportunity that has been missed should they not reach their fundraising goal. Already, €1,435 has been raised through 40 donations, with a target of reaching €3500.

Fraser is part of a group of 4 young Wexford lads who have been selected. They are all part of the Richie Ivory Jiu Jitsu club, which is based in Gorey town.

Since the rise of Conor McGregor and with Paul Hughes currently tearing it up in the world of MMA, the sport’s rise has been exponential. Despite that – currently in Ireland, there is no funding from Sports Ireland as MMA not recognised. Without financial support from Sport Ireland or Governing bodies, it makes these trips quite difficult from a parent’s perspective.

For those who are willing to support these Wexford athletes, you can donate at the GoFundMe link here: https://gofund.me/8f243b38

Another link has also been placed for potential businesses to jump on board as sponsors for the young athletes. If you’re a business owners, and you are willing to help, you can check out the GoFundMe here. Likewise, the parents – and supporters of the young athletes – are looking for raffle prizes from local businesses who can lend their hand in supporting: https://www.idonate.ie/crowdfunder/ElizabethMolloy
