Wexford Camogie reveal mandate they will bring to Congress regarding Skorts debate

A Special Congress will be held this evening…

The Congress will be held in relation to the controversial skorts-shorts debate that has been plastered across both national and international headlines over the past number of weeks.

As it stands, Camogie players in Ireland are required to wear skorts. Under current rules, camogie players are not permitted to wear shorts during matches. Over the last number of weeks in particular, Camogie players have came out against this idea. Camogie players – and the GPA – are calling for choice, to allow Camogie players to wear either shorts or skorts – and to give players playing the sport an individual choice.

We reached out to Wexford Camogie, who revealed to us the mandate that they will bring to this evening’s Special Congress on the matter:

“All 41 clubs were contacted by county board and all clubs replied, with 100% support for the motion to give individual players the choice between Skorts or Shorts,” Wexford Camogie Chairperson, Martina Donnellan, told Wexford Weekly.

In a previous interview, Wexford Camogie vowed to support the views of the players and that is exactly what they will do at this evening’s Congress:

“This is the mandate that Wexford Camogie will take to Congress,” she confirmed.

During the previous Camogie Congress, held in 2024, Wexford were against the motion at Congress. This was the mandate that Wexford Camogie previously went to Congress with, revealing that “the vast majority had no issue wearing the skort.”

However, in the space of a year – and with the issue more ever-present in the media – Wexford have changed their stance. They will be supporting individual choice at this evening’s Special Congress – and it’s expected that the motion will pass.
