Well-known Ferns man to fight on upcoming MMA card in Dublin

A well-known Ferns local is set to fight on an upcoming MMA card in Dublin…

Ferns native, Johnny Dwyer, would be well-known in Wexford hurling circles, but he will be switching the hurling pitch for the Octagon this weekend.

Dwyer was Ferns’ hero in the 2022 Wexford Senior hurling final when he hit a side-line over the bar in the dying stages to help Ferns win their first-ever Senior hurling title.

Over the last 20 weeks, the Ferns man has been undergoing the ‘Train Alta’ programme, an MMA programme which “works through a staged approach to develop your skills across 20-weeks to have the option to compete in an amateur MMA finale fight night.”

Fighting out of Richie Ivory’s gym in Gorey, Dwyer has opted to take on the amatuer fight this weekend (Satuday) to conclude the programme.

The Ferns man will be fighting Dylan O’Dowd of SBG Drogheda.

A number of other Wexford men will also be fighitng on the night and representing Richie Ivory’s MMA gym in Gorey. They include: Leon Doyle, Brian O’Neill, Luke Kelly, Dominick Totos, Patrick Brazzil, Johnny Flood, Patrick Kearon and Cody O’Connor.

A total of 32 fights will take place at the Fairyhouse Racecourse in Dublin, starting at 4pm and finishing at 10pm on Saturday June 14th.

All mentioned above will be coming across opponents from a wide-range of gyms who also partook in the Train Alta programme. The other gyms competing fall under John Kavanagh’s branch of ‘Straigh Blast Gym’ MMA gyms, including SBG Clonmel, SBG Drogheda, SBG HQ, SBG Cork, and SBG Charlestown.
