Wexford’s Mick Wallace could run for President of Ireland

Mick Wallace is not ruling himself out of contention for the next President of Ireland…

Wallace is a former politician, property developer and former Member of the European Parliament (MEP). He was an MEP for Ireland South from 2019 to 2024. Wallace was a late entrant to the last General Election in the Wexford consituency, though he didn’t get enough votes to be elected.

Michael D. Higgins is the current President of Ireland, but his terms are about to end. Every seven years the public elect a new President.

The 2025 Irish presidential election must take place by Tuesday, 11 November 2025.

Many parties have not yet decided or confirmed who they will run leading to increased speculation around the country.

Sinn Féin leader, MaryLou McDonald, could be in contention given her recent comments.

“I think over the next number of weeks, probably the end of July and into August, we will have a clearer picture of what we are doing,” she said.

Meanwhile, Simon Coveney and former GAA president, Sean Kelly, are potential Fine Gael candidates. Former MMA star, Conor McGregor, has also expressed his interest in running, though it seems unlikely that he would reach the criteria. Peter Casey – a successful Entrepreneur who was unsuccessful in the 2018 elections, is another potential Independent candidate. For Fianna Fail, Bertie Ahern may be their choice of candidate – but only time will tell.

Speaking in an interview with South East Radio, Wexford man Mick Wallace said that he’s not ruling a potential presidency run out:

“Michael D. has brought integrity and international respect to the role. That platform matters.”

However, Wallace did note that he would not run if independent Galway TD Catherine Connolly entered the upcoming Presidential race.

“She’s the only one I believe could fill that role like Michael D. did,” he said. “If she runs, I won’t. But if she doesn’t – let’s see.”

Mick Wallace may not be the only Wexford man running for Presidency either. There has been some speculation that former Labour TD, Brendan Howlin, may also be in the running.
