A Wexford business and well-known garden has announced their closure…
Iris Checkett, who owned the well-known Japanese themed garden – Glenavon Japanese Garden in Courtown – has announced the closure of the gardens after more than two decades. Entry to the stunning garden typically cost €6 per person. The Garden was officially closed to allow Iris to enjoy her well-earned retirement.
For many summers, Iris has poured her heart and soul into creating a space that has brought joy, peace and inspiration to countless visitors.
Approximately 50 people showed up to support the garden on their final day on Sunday.
“What an incredible final open day it was. We are so grateful to everyone who came along, whether it was your very first visit, or one last return to a place you’ve loved for years. The support, kind words and memories shared made it a truly special send-off for Iris’s garden.”

“This space has been her pride and joy for decades, a labour of love that grew from humble beginnings into something that touched so many people. From the earliest days of digging and planting, through the many summers of hard work and bloom, right up to yesterday’s farewell, the garden has always been a reflection of her heart and dedication.”
“Iris is such an inspiration. We hope you enjoy looking back as much as we’ve enjoyed sharing this journey. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being part of it.” a spokesperson said.
The Glenavon Japanese Garden in Courtown officially closed on Sunday August 31st 2025.
