16 individuals have written to the Wexford County Council seeking a nomination to run for the next President of Ireland…
One of the more high-profile names is former UFC star, Conor McGregor, who is amonst the names the names seeking a Presidential nomination from Wexford County Council.
Wexford County Council will host a special meeting next Friday, September 19th, to hear from candidates seeking nomination for the 2025 Presidential Election.
Invites have been issued to all prospective candidates. Each candidate will be given a 5-minute slot, with no Q&A time from Wexford County Councillors. Although all candidates will receive an invite to the September 19th ‘Special Sitting’ in Wexford, this does not mean that all candidates will accept the offer and actually attend.
According to South East Radio, the ‘Special Sitting’ will begin at 3:00 PM and will be broadcast online to the public. The full list of candidates and the official agenda will be published in advance.
Some other high-profile names include Peter Casey, who was on the ballot paper during the last Presidential Election. Casey received 23.3% of the first-preference votes in the 2018 Irish presidential election, coming in second place behind incumbent Michael D. Higgins (55.8%).
While some Wexford Councillors may not agree with specific individuals, they are all in agreement that in a democratic society, the Council needs to listen to prospective candidates despite the views they hold – and going against this, is to go down a slippery road.
At least 4 local authorities (out of 31 county or city councils) or at least 20 members of the Oireachtas are needed to secure a nomination on the Ballot paper.
Following the meeting, Wexford County Council may nominate an individual, however, they also may follow suit with some Councils and refuse to nominate any individual whatsoever.

The next election is scheduled for October 24, 2025, following the end of incumbent Michael D. Higgins’ second term on November 11, 2025.
